Ah, I have just realised the protection was not at the Shrieking
Shack end of the tunnel - as Jo Ann points out up thread, it took the
form of the Whomping Willow, I forgot that.
But Peter would still have been necessary to press the knot on the
tree to allow James & Snape to back out safely. James must have taken
him with him on the rescue mission. Odd that his presence has not
been mentioned by anyone. Snape could be excused from seeing him
because he's terrified, and a rat is small, and he doesn't know about
the animagi.
If he did want to kill James & Snape, he seems to have bottled out on
this occasion - or perhaps Sirius was there, keeping an eye on him.
