Carol responds:
Do we actually have canon evidence that Dumbledore saved her? Maybe
Snape did it--unwillingly but knowing it was his duty. Assuming that
he did go into the forest (and I haven't seen any compelling evidence
that he didn't act on his intention), wouldn't he have encountered the
Centaurs? And how would he have known that Harry, Hermione and friends
had actually left the forest and headed for the MoM if the Centaurs
didn't tell him about the Thestrals? How Snape would have convinced
them to cooperate without using magic against them and being captured
himself, I have no idea. Alternate scenarios, anyone? 

Carol, picturing Snape wafting Umbridge out of the forest on a
conjured stretcher, grumbling about Potter all the way
