Perhaps I wasn't clear. LV would go after Peter for information
about the Potters' location and for information about Sirius' hiding
place (because LV would assume Sirius was the SK). Since Sirius
isn't protected by a Fidelius Charm, his whereabouts could be spoken
about by others. Once he had Peter in his grip, LV would find out
that in fact he'd hit the jackpot because it was Peter who was the SK
after all!
And since Peter was known to be one of the trio of pals that James
Potter had all through school, I believe he would have been one of
the first people LV and DE's would have gone after.
The issue is: how much do we trust Peter to hold up under torture?
