Great question; never thought about that, but I got the impression 
they were 'angry' brains.  Maybe they take the brains of evil witches 
and wizards and put them in this solution to revive the brains.  Then 
they can try to decipher the mind of a madman!  Or madwoman.

Not the same as being alive of course.  We know no magic can do 
that.
