Despite the fact that JKR uses the word "fiercely" in describing 
Harry's response, I read him as saying it rather archly to Snape - a 
bit tongue-in-cheek - and I think that McGonagall picked up on that 
in the incident. after all, he had just been threatened by the son of 
a Death Eater.
