Exactly. Muggleborn Hermione must have a whole lot of neurons 
associating "horse-shaped" with "beast"  which unfortunately 
doesn't fit the reality of her new environment.  She can't counter 
the effect because she isn't even aware of it, though the 
encounter at the end of  OOP may have raised her 
consciousness somewhat.
