I'm not British, but the exchange rate doesn't seem unfair to me.
Considering that one Galleon is a lot more money than one pound.
Remember, the Weasleys had what, practically none, in their vault? 500
is enough for a trip for two adults and 5 kids to Egypt and a new
wand? Crudely, that's 2500 pounds. Sounds about right to me.
