I wonder if your first [amusing :-)] statement plays into the final
question? That is, maybe Sirius wasn't *thinking* very logically but
just reacting. He got worried...he wondered if J/L/H were safe...he
rushed off to the place most *likely* for them to have been,
forgetting that if all was well, he wouldn't have been able to see
them even if they were there because of the Fidelius Charm.
But as you ask, do we know what breaks the FC? Does it end as soon
as a party being protected is killed? I don't think we know. But if
it is broken that way, then it may just be that Sirius "lucked out"
in being able to determine what had happened.
