I didn't remenber Lupin flatly stating "He's dead"?  I remember that 
he began to say it, but didn't finish it.  I'm sure you are right 
that adults are more inclined to look for questions/subtleties.  
Which I guess is the mark of the genius of JKR that she can write in 
such a manner as to make us do precisely that, while still writing at 
a level that children can relate to.
