That is an assumption which could be wrong. I've been trying to 
locate a message I wrote on this very point some while ago when I 
pointed out that when I was in my grammar school, I didn't know 
everyone in a group necessarily.

We got to know a small circle of friends, one or two older boys might 
be known because of their position in the school heirarchy or a 
society connection. There has to be some sort of common ground - 
mutual friends, similar interests, competition in a subject; being in 
the same classroom isn't an essential element of that.
