Perhaps he didn't take Sirius seriously (no pun intended) when he 
said to keep the bike, and realized it later (as he suggests), along 
with realizing how odd that was. Perhaps after he left he couldn't 
find Sirius, then remembered what he said, and decided to do whatever 
he did with the bike (maybe he just left it at Sirius' house?).
