I just don't think that Hagrid would be afraid of a monster. This is Hagrid! 
He would be excited and trying to catch it to make a pet of it, remember Aragog, Norbert, the Skrewts? Also the man who frequently strolls through the Dark Forest is going to cower before something that's killing roosters? I'm sorry, but I just don't believe it. I think I'm going more toward the DE 
theory but I haven't decided on the particulars yet.
