There is indeed a star called Sirius or the dog star,
it is however, invisible to the naked eye. I would
think perhaps this has more to do with JKR's choice of
that name for that charecter especially since as an
animagus he turns into a dog. Looking for some
connection between out of context Bible passages and
any of the Harry Poter books just seems to be to be
rather a bit far-fetched.
