Excellent post, Carol.  I would also suggest that it's quite possible
that this was the first time it had ever occurred to Lupin that Harry
had actually heard/seen his parents' death.  Like a lot of adults who
don't have children themselves, his knowledge of what a baby/toddler
is capable of is second-hand at best, and he probably assumed that
somehow the entire experience hadn't registered with toddler!Harry. 
To hear from Harry that he did hear and actually remembered what was
said would be a rather shocking experience for Lupin.
