I knew  because people had been telling Harry for hundreds of 
pages that it was important for him to learn to block the visions. It 
would have been rather anticlimactic if they'd all been wrong. 
Besides, anything that Snape, Sirius, Dumbledore, Hermione 
and Lupin agree on must be downright self-evident.

In retrospect the biggest clue is that  in the earlier OOP visions, 
Harry *is* Voldemort, but in the last vision he *sees* Voldemort.

JKR has said the mirror wouldn't have been as useful as you 
think...I'm afraid that if Sirius and James had them, Pettigrew had 
one too, so that line of communication was probably covered.
