I've been re-reading and re-watching the COS movie because of these 
questions.  And I do have an answer for this one.  Yes, Dumbledore 
actually says that Tom Riddle is the last descendant/ancestor of 
Slytherin.

(Note--in the HB version, it says descendant; int the PB version 
with a LATER publishing date it is changed back to ancestor--
interesting.)

This is from Chapter 18, page 332-333, Dobby's Reward (US hardback)

"You can speak Parseltongue, Harry," said Dumbledore 
calmly, "because Lord Voldemort--who IS the last remaining 
descendant of Salazar Slytherin--can speak Parseltongue.  Unless I'm 
much mistaken, he transferred some of his own powers to you the 
night he gave you that scar.  Not something he intended to do, I'm 
sure..."
