Yes, I thought of that too.  But I think the people doing the 
stopping were fairly powerful wizards--and then, the statues that 
had been enchanted by Dumbledore, or by someone else.  The part that 
I found significant was that Dobby had that kind of quickness or 
power--I think it might be some indication that the house elves will 
play an important role in the last two books.  And yes, I agree--I 
think everyone will have to make a choice (a prevalent theme 
throughout the books) about whether to join with the good or evil 
side.

Dobby seems to have made that choice already by coming to Harry's 
defense throughout COS--and then later in GOF.
