Conversely, why would he _think_ to write and tell Dumbledore? Unless he'd

Putting yourself into the shoes of the young Tom Riddle (for whom all this
was extremely new), then I think it would have been equally remarkable (and
therefore equally _un_remarkable) no matter what his wand had been made of.
And having become familiar with it during his school years, would he even
have thought to wonder about whether it had any special significance - it
could well just have become one of those things that's so familiar you just
_don't_ think about them
