Forgive me for not having my books unpacked yet, so I can't go and
re-read, but I don't see how those quotes indicate that Frank himself
was in the service until the war was over.

The war is over in '45, but couldn't Frank have been sent back sooner,
turned "funny" by the war that is now (of '45) over?  

Or am I just befuddled by too much talk about time-travel tonight?
