Geoff:
Speaking as another bloke and an English one at that, I'll wager that 
it was the former - he didn't want /anyone/ to see him crying and 
vulnerable. I don't think, from my own experience, that jealousy even 
entered into it.

It's that damned "boys don't cry" syndrome which is overtly or 
covertly hammered into us here in the UK......
