Or perhaps they thought Harry and the others would be pestered by the
other kids on the train (which is a confined space and they wouldn't
be able to leave it) about why they'd disappeared so abruptly before
Christmas.  At Hogwarts it would be easier to avoid nosy parkers who
ask a lot of questions.
