Hagrid's been JKR's source of misinformation before. Think about the
way she phrases it: "myst'ry is why You-Know-Who never tried to
get 'em on his side", given that the books are as much mystery as
fantasy, and the way she quietly foreshadows things.

scene mirrors the DEs with the muggles at the quidditch cup, and
pretty much equates Marauders to DEs. But something changed James. I
think he really did hate the dark arts, and being approached by
Voldemort was a wake-up call.
