In COS when Professor Binns explains about the legend of the chamber he says "none would be able to open it until his own "true heir" arrived at the school. Perhaps Harry is LV's counterpart in being the "true heir" of Gryffindor. I would imagine this would be a direct descendency from the original founder as opposed to an heir via some other kind of relationship.
