Wasn't Lucius Malfoy Sirius' brother-in-law, besides being roughly a 
decade older?  Wouldn't it have been simple enough for Sirius to have 
encountered Lucius at family gatherings before he ran away from home, 
even before he began his schooling at Hogwarts?  Chance conversation 
at family gatherings can be quite revealing, especially when there's 
no football on tv to distract the menfolk...
