  I took it as just an example of his grandmother's old fashioned 
ways.  Remember Hagrid saying something along the lines of "Nobody 
has frogs/toads anymore" before buying Harry his owl. She comes 
across as a bit of a battleaxe with a "what was good enough for me, 
is good enough for anybody!" attitude.
