SSSusan:
A bit of nitpicking, perhaps, since it's not the key part of your 
argument, but I'm not sure we *know* that Snape was a victim of child 
abuse.  We saw that bit where *a* hook-nosed man was yelling at a 
woman, with a child cowering in the corner.  I'll grant that lots of 
people assume that was Snape as a child with his parents, but others 
have wondered if it weren't Snape himself doing the yelling.  And 
even if that seems totally unlikely, I'm still not sure we know he 
was abused from that one little snippet.
