Was it even made public knowledge that the Chamber had been opened 
the first time? Dumbledore probably deduced it afterwards and the 
Malfoys probably had first-hand knowledge, but Binns calls the 
Chamber of Secrets an unproven legend. If the only thing people knew 
was that a monster had been on the rampage in the school, attacked 
several students and finally killed someone, Hagrid and Aragog fit 
the picture. In Riddle's memory, Headmaster Dippet says nothing of 
the Chamber either.
