I don't think they're clues but rather strategic inserts of Neville's
name so that we're not surprised when he becomes increasingly
important throughout OOTP and is present at the climatic battle in
the MoM.  If the only times we ever "see" Neville are when he's
melting another cauldron, then it wouldn't have quite the impact. 
This way, he pops up in Harry's mind a lot and we're used to his
increased presence.

Magda (who also thought that "Mark Evans" in OOTP was a subtle,
humorous hint that we should mark (pay attention to) the name Evans
when it popped up later in the book)
