There was a thread way, way back pointing out that it's stated that
NEWTS were the highest qualification *offered by Hogwarts*. The
implication being that other places offered higher qualifications.
In Cos it mentions "venerable-looking wizards arguing over the latest
article in Transfiguration Today.." -  they sound like academics to me.

No, I suspect  that there are opportunities to go further than NEWT
level; not  that Hermione needs them - in her career choices she
wouldn't even need that.
