<snip?
Now, it *is* interesting to note that the line used in the movie --
"DD has already risked enough on my behalf" -- does not occur in the
book. So, technically, it's possible that, had Lupin not resigned, DD
would have put his foot down.

What do people think? Would DD have done, had Lupin not volunteered
to go?

I think that Lupin's movie line, is just in reference to the fact that
Dumbledore allowed him to go to Hogwarts when no other Headmaster
would have. He went to the trouble of planting the Whomping Willow,
tunneling to Hogsmead, and setting up the Shrieking Shack just for him.
Dumbledore kept Lupin's secret for him, he defended him against Snape,
and trusted him despite the fact that he and Sirius were great friends.

I don't think for one-second that Dumbledore would have fired Lupin. Harry
Ron and Hermione would have been able to explain that Lupin left early to
try and protect them. It was a mistake that made Lupin for get to take his
potion that night, although I know a few might wish to dispute that fact ;).
I'm sure that Dumbledore would understand the fact that seeing your dead
friend and a student being pulled to the Whomping Willow with
someone known to be a mad murdering lunatic would cause nearly anyone
to momentarily forget that he needed to take a potion. I know it would be
fairly easy for me to do so, but maybe I'm just absent minded.
