Just to add a little more confusion to that already addressed.  "There 
are others ways to destroy a man"  Didn't DD say that?

There is a concept in the spiritual life (or Religious Life) that to 
become one with God and the instrument of God's Love one must *die to 
self*.  This is a form of death.  Not physical death, but an 
emotional, psychologically, philosophically and spiritual *death*.  A 
death of the ego. A death of the *me, me, me*.  This is one way that 
LV can die in us all.  (And I think that whatever else JKR may be 
doing, she likes the subliminal, speak directly to the subconscious, 
type of stuff.)

Also there are many way to defeat someone without killing them.  Many 
have observed that the books are a chess game.  Checkmate does not 
necessary mean that the king is dead.
