The reality appears to be that the Pope, through a spokesman,
*defended* the HP books. Here's the link:

The unidentified papal spokesman was quoted as saying,<< "I don't see
any problem in the Harry Potter series.
"They aren't bad. If I have understood well the intentions of Harry
Potter's author, they help children to see the difference between good
and evil."
He added that the Vatican thought JK Rowling lived her life like a
Christian, and that her way of writing reflected that. >>
Personally, I think the spokesman missed out on the themes of love and
caring throughout the series, but he's made a good start.
Pople John-Paul's last book, however, did knock HBP off #1, even if
just for a little while. That's about the only attack you can get out
of that.
