Marozi:

"Gobstones Club" sounds like the nerdiest possible
extracurricular activity that Hogwarts has to offer. 
You're right, it doesn't even have the intellectual
arrogance of Chess Club.  Honestly, I think JKR was
basically trying to communicate that Snape's geekitude
was hereditary. I don't think it usually works that
way in real life, but the Prince DNA evidently carries
some sort of uncool gene.
