I wondered that myself.  Not only that, he dragged Dumbledorethrough the icy sea, fully clothed to get back out of the cave.  Had to look back to GoF to see if I was right that Harry said he couldn't swim more than a couple laps of that pool/tub in the prefect's bathroom, he was terrified at the thought of going into the lake.  Dudley had had swimming lessons but he didn't.  Must've taken lessons sometime during fifth year, don'cha think. ;)  Maybe we're supposed to think that since he swam so well in the lake to get Ron that now he's completely confident in his swimming ability!?
