  Dumbledore was able to produce the fire, but I believe that Harry
still had to help him in the boat and get them accross the lake. 
After Dumbledore drank the potion he could hardly stand.  If Harry
wasn't there Dumbledore would not have even finished the potion, But
if he did the inferi would have finished him off while he was in his
weakened condition.

  I do however agree with you that it should have been mentioned
before book 6.  It felt kind of like they were saying, " O yea!  There
are these other really scary things too.  They are really dangerous,
and they wil try to kill you.  I guess I should have told you sometime
in the last 5 years.  My bad."
