I think that interpretation of his character would be more valid 
before the Occulomency lessons in OOTP. I think those showed that 
Snape had very little vested interest in teaching Harry anything. He 
clearly let his personal feelings get in the way. Snape cruelty 
wasn't impersonal, drill instructor be all you can be type of 
cruelty, it was deeply personal and ugly.

before OOTP though, I think that could have been a very good 
argument in favor of Snape.
