There is actually an almost parallell scen earlier in the book, this
time Snape being the one carrying the light.

"A lantern was bobbing at the distant [---] It was not until the
glowing yellow light was ten feet away [---]that he recognised
[---]the uplit hooked nose and long, black, greasy hair of Severus
Snape." (HBP p. 152)
