I think in private Lupin did indeed stand up to his friends because 
Sirius says that Lupin made them feel ashamed of themselves 
sometimes. I don't believe it was fear of his friends' censure that 
made Lupin not intervene but rather that he may have seen it as 
disloyal to criticise them in front of a crowd of onlookers. In 
becoming Animagi, Lupin felt they had shown him a loyalty beyond his 
wildest dreams and he owed them.  Even though I don't agree with his 
lack of action but he was afterall only fifteen.  This scene made me 
even more sympathetic to Lupin, not less because it shows he isn't a 
saint. Thank Merlin!
