But JKR says that magic usually shows itself by age 11. If Neville
showed signs of magic at age 8, then he's certainly within the
timeperiod that she has set up. It's late, in childhood perhaps, but
it's not an example of someone showing his magical powers late in
life as he's 8 and the normal cutoff age is 11.
Also, whether Neville did magic as a result of a dangerous situation
or not doesn't have any bearing on the issue--Neville *is* a wizard
and his powers would have shown themselves eventually.
