I think more than being a comment on something as trivial as Snape's 
fashion preference or something as huge as his ultimate loyalties, JKR 
here is saying that that not only does she know Snape, the rest of the 
characters have known him for 10 years now and would obviously have 
questions - awkward ones too - if Mr. Reformed Death Eater started 
wearing a creepy turban and obeying the back of his head.
