Sirius tells us when: just before he turned into a rat. (but 
definately not at the same time). I myself believe that the spell he 
used to blow up the street ALSO cut off his finger-- Someting that 
cut off his finger and went on to a gas pipe or something... He was 
holding his wand behind his back, remember?
