What if the danger these people have to face comes from inside
themselves? (Haven't seen this been discussed before, but I apologize
if that is the case.)
When JKR said that Dumbledore believed that the DADA job "might bring
out the worst in Snape" (J.K. Rowling at the Royal Albert Hall, 26
June 2003), maybe it also meant that this is what the curse does. It
brings out the worst in people - meaning everyone - not just Snape.
In that case the answer would be to try and hire somebody who seems
harmless (like Lockhart) or somebody whose dark sides you know about,
and you belive that person in one way or an other is capable of
handling this problem (like Lupin and his furry little problem).
