Geoff:
In respect of the Mirror, Dumbledore remarked:
'However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge or truth. Men
have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been
driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.'
(Philosopher's Stone "The Mirror of Erised" p.157 UK edition)
So Harry was not alone in being attracted. But, I would wager that
there were many others, like Ron, who were not interested in the
Mirror.
Almost everything which might become obsessive has its fans and its
detractors. After all, many contributors to this group are
Pottertropic but there are many people of my acquaintance (including
my wife) who are not interested at all. It's true of cricket,
politics, pop music and romantic fiction....
