I think considering what Snape's emotional state either was or was becoming,
this was the only kind of love it could have been. He definitely wasn't in
the position for a selfless kind of love where he watched Lily fall for
James with his blessing. A friend of mine off-list once suggested to me that
maybe he sent Voldemort after James and Harry, thinking Lily would be
spared, and it was after her death that he realized what he'd done. I'm not
sure if this actually happened or not, but I found the idea really
interesting.
