I was thinking that Harry's glimpse of the kneeling Rookwood was 
something Voldemort was remembering at the time, not what was 
actually happening. The scene probably took place the night of the 
breakout. So Voldemort's insane happiness would be due to his new 
realization that he's got a vastly better chance at getting the 
prophecy and finding out how to take down the Potter brat than he 
had before.
