I snipped a lot, but I want to say that I find this idea intriguing.  I
looked through the PoA beginning chapters and the closest thing
I could find to an object that might fit the parameters was Percy's
Head Boy badge.  1) It is seen early on in the book.  2)  There is
some indication that there might be some unusual magic associated
with it (the sneakoscope).  3) There might be some way to use it to
explain Percy's later actions.

Just the beginnings of an idea.
