We have seen, so far, three songs of the Hat about Sorting. (Cited by 
me in an earlier post to this thread.) In two of those three songs, 
blood status is not even mentioned. 

If the Sorting is just the Hat getting each child to make their choice, 
your pureblood bigots would surely choose Slytherin, as you say. It is 
the tradition in their families. But why would anyone else? Presumably 
because the House stands for other things which ARE appealing to some 
non-purebloods.

It seems to me that Sorting into Slytherin can occur for a number of 
reasons, being a purebllod bigot being only one. And probably, not even 
the most important one. It is certainly not a criterion all members 
have to meet.
