  The way I see it, it is because Lily was given a choice. Voldemort told her to step aside, he was willing to spare her life, but she wouldn't let her son die while she could live. She literally gaver her life for Harry's. 
   
  Many people believe that Lily knew the ancient magic she was going to set upon Harry to protect him, and that's why she made Voldemort kill her. I don't believe in this myself. I think if Lily knew the protection she could leave Harry and she died on purpose then there'd be no such protection.
