The WW reminds me of some of James Thurber's ditzier female relatives 
in this respect--the great aunt (?) who was obsessed with the idea 
that electricity was leaking out of empty light sockets all over the 
house, and Thurber's own mother, who was convinced that it was very 
hard on the engine to drive a car without gasoline in it. But you sort 
of *expect* this sort of thing from eccentric middle-aged ladies circa 
1910.
