Well, as non-Brit, I have to say that the word "git" is used quite
often in the the books, along with "prat". So being unfamiliar with
Britspeak, I would conclude that is a very common insult to use. If
I were to write a fanfic and wanted to try to keep everyone in
character, I'd be tempted to use the term. Yes, "dictionaries"
online can provide poor, ignorant Americans like me other insults
that are used in British slang. However, without having seen or
heard them used, I would try to avoid those words since I couldn't
be sure I knew exactly how they should be used.

I've noticed a lot of British fanfic writers also use the word, by
the way.

Who is tired of the fact that when some people display their
misunderstanding or ignorance (in the unknowing sense of the word)
about another culture, country, etc., some people get all bent out
of shape about it. And that goes for Americans too. How else are we
to learn about one another?
